YOUNG Jersey snooker talent Archie Greier is preparing for a major step forward in his development when he heads to Reading tomorrow to compete in week three of the Snooker 900 Doubles event — alongside his mentor and World Snooker Masters number one, Aaron Canavan.

The tournament marks a significant moment for Greier, who has already shown his ability in the fast-paced Snooker 900 format.

He previously reached the semi-finals of a junior 900 event in Reading, but this time the challenge is stepped up as he partners Canavan, the senior World Champion in 2018.

Snooker 900 is a high-intensity, television-friendly format, with each match decided by a single 15-minute frame and a strict 20-second shot clock.

In the doubles version, partners must alternate shots, placing a premium on rhythm, communication and attacking play — an ideal environment for Greier to test himself alongside one of the sport’s elite performers.

For the young Jersey cueist, the chance to compete with his coach on a competitive stage offers valuable experience and exposure, while Canavan’s presence provides a steadying influence in a format where mistakes are quickly punished.

As the pair head into the third week of the event, Greier will be hoping to build on his previous success in Reading and make the most of a rare opportunity to compete shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best.
