It was a bittersweet result for the Jersey Bulls, as they drew 1-1 to VCD Athletic, despite dominating open play.

The Bulls side which took to the field today differed from last week, with centre back Jamie Watling making his debut and young talent Will Yates introduced to the starting lineup. Frank Tobin also stepped in, replacing the absent Jonny Le Quesne in the starting 11.

There was no hesitation for the boys in red to show their intent, as Jay Giles’ corner found the head of Jack Lumsden in the seventh minute, but the latter just couldn’t steer the ball in, as it hit the side netting.

Such a close chance, within the first ten minutes of the game, would have surely put the visitors on high alert.

Eleven minutes later, Jersey’s Rai Dos Santos created another chance with a darting run, played through to a one-on-one with VCD Athletic’s goalkeeper Frankie Leonard, but his weak shot was stuffed by the keeper, going out for a corner.

The home side’s wait for a goal didn’t go much longer, as in the 22nd minute, Jay Giles once again whipped in the corner, with Jack Lumsden as the primary target on the near post. However, as the ball went just out of Lumsden’s reach, VCD Athletic’s Charlie Heatley found himself in a moment of tragedy, heading it into his own net to give Jersey Bulls the lead, 1-0.

With the scoring now opened, hopes were high among supporters that the Bulls would continue to build on their lead.

It wasn’t without lack of trying, as the Caesareans moved the ball incredibly well to create countless opportunities, but they just seemed to lack that finishing touch.

Dos Santos was an absolute handful for the visiting defence, constantly finding space to make several chances. Chief of these had to be his shot from the edge of the box, which hit the left post after receiving a skillful flick from Miguel Carvalho.

After missing so many chances, the Bulls were awarded a penalty in the 42nd minute, after Adam Trotter was brought down by VCD Athletic’s Connor Dymond. A penalty seemed a prime opportunity for the hosts to double their lead as Luke Watson stepped up to take the shot.

Unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be, as Watson’s effort smashed the crossbar, seeing the opportunity go begging.

With that effort being the first half’s last significant chance, the Jersey Bulls knew they had to amp up their efforts in the second half to maintain their lead.

The second half was dominated by the Jersey Bulls, as they played some exceptional football to move the ball downfield, but their issues in front of goal carried over from last week’s encounter with Fisher, as the boys in red just couldn’t manage to convert numerous chances.

This came back to bite the hosts in the end, as Nathaniel Olawole took his chance to level it in the 58th minute, making it 1-1.

Even though Jersey’s premier side didn’t relent in their playmaking, making countless chances to possibly go ahead, they just couldn’t convert as the whistle blew for full time, 1-1.

Carvalho’s efforts on the right wing didn’t go unnoticed, as his relentless drive forward was a key factor to the Bulls’ attack this afternoon, earning him Man of the Match honours.

The Jersey Bulls don’t have much time to prepare for their upcoming fixture, as they travel over to face Merstham away, still in pursuit of their first Isthmian League South East Division win.
