JERSEY captain Chloe Greechan says her team are ‘raring to go’ for this weekend’s women’s T20 inter-insular series against Guernsey.
The inter-island clash returns for the first time since May 2019, with three matches to be played at Grainville.
Guernsey won the last encounter by seven wickets, with 13 balls still remaining, but following a successful recent quadrangular tournament in France, where they beat the hosts, Spain and Austria, the Lionesses are approaching a 2022 triple-header full of confidence.
‘We’ve prepared well, we’re a great team and a solid unit and I think we’ll go all right,’ said Greechan, who will guide the hosts through two games tomorrow and one on Sunday.
‘The girls have been training twice a week with group sessions and a lot of them do one-to-ones.’
While Greechan is among a number of survivors from 2019, some of the players from back then, such as Erin Gouge and Grace Wetherall, are still young enough to play for the under-15s. Geechan believes the experience and maturity they have gained since then should give Jersey the edge, while some new faces have also come to the fore, including 17-year-old Trinity Smith, who was shortlisted for the ICC’s worldwide Player of the Month award for May 2022.
‘I was one of the youngest back in 2019 and now I’m one of the senior players,’ added Greechan. ‘We now need the senior players to step up and let the younger ones learn and we should be all right.
‘It’s been a good preparation for them and it’s a good learning curve and they are more than ready. They’ve trained hard throughout the last two, three years, so they are raring to go and they deserve their shot here.
‘We’ve got a great set-up here in Jersey now for women and the girls now have got a pathway with U11s, U13s and U15s all feeding into the women’s squad, so it won’t be long before you will see a lot more of them named in our team.’
The first inter-insular bout begins at 11am tomorrow, followed by another at 3pm. The final match is due to begin at 11am on Sunday morning.
‘We haven’t had an inter-insular for a number of years but with a home crowd and a home deck, we should be prepared enough,’ said Greechan.
