Bilbao: Sam shines bright

A team of junior and senior Jersey Paddle Club members travelled to Spain for the river race, with the juniors in particular putting in some stand-out performances.

Sam Axford won the under-16s race and younger brother Toby who is only 11, finished eighth and will clearly be challenging his brother for years to come.

In the U10s race Laird Dawson took the win and six year old Jacques Thomas, who was one of the youngest competing, came seventh.

As well as junior categories, the event hosts both amateur and élite senior divisions, with some of the world’s top paddle boarders drawing a big crowd.

Junior Sam Axford showed he can mix with the best of them by placing second in the men’s 6km amateur race, with Chris Bates finishing (22).

The women fought hard in the élite 10km race, with Verity Thomas placing highest (22nd). Robin Allix (27th) and Chloë Blampied (28th) were not too far behind.

Next up for some of the Island’s top paddlers is the Hossegor Paddle Games in France on 24 June.
