Netball: England star Cookey eyes Superleague link with Jersey

The seven-time Superleague winner – on a scouting mission to the Island as Stars’ director of netball – gave strong indication that ties with Jersey would be favoured as the sport enjoys increasing coverage and popularity.

Cookey earned 114 caps for England before retiring from international netball in 2015.

‘We’re definitely on the lookout to see who we can get involved with when they get a little bit older,’ she said.

‘We want these girls to come and be players for us rather than for Loughborough Lightning or Team Bath. Jersey’s not far at all for us – it’s an hour away on the plane so it’s a great tap in.’

Cookey, who won four of her Superleague titles alongside Serena Guthrie at Team Bath, took time to highlight the success of one of Jersey’s greatest sporting products – and the benefit of the Islander’s success Down Under with Northern Mystics and Giants.

‘Serena is a class act,’ she said. ‘She’s way up there and she’s even got room to improve.

‘Serena has that influence where she can come back and share.

‘She’s a true gem.’
