The Islander is struggling with a wrist injury and has acted on doubts raised last month by opting against competing in Sheffield on 28 February. The decision means he will not defend the gold medal he retained 12 months ago.

He is, however, still on course to challenge the 65-metre Olympic Games qualifying standard in the discus and will compete in that event, both at home and abroad, in the coming months.

Speaking from Tenerife during a three-week warm weather training camp, Duquemin said: ‘I’m just not ready to do myself justice at the British Champs. I know I can go far enough to get a medal, but I simply can’t get enough throwing in to throw a distance that I think is respectable.’
