Following a heated opening night on Monday – where St Paul’s and Jersey Wanderers both progressed into the quarter-finals of the Charity Cup – Charlie Petulla and Aaron Gouveia were both unstoppable on their competitive debuts for St Peter and St Brelade (scoring four and three respectively), while Bradley Russell also struck thrice for Grouville.
St Paul’s 4-0 St Lawrence
Jersey Scottish 1-2 Jersey Wanderers
St Peter 5-1 First Tower
Sporting Academics 0-3 St Brelade
Beeches OB 0-4 Grouville
St Clement A-A St Ouen*
*match to be replayed on Saturday 15 August
On a rain-affected evening – which led to the abandonment of St Clement’s home tie against St Ouen due to a waterlogged pitch – Petulla and his new St Peter colleagues joined Jersey Wanderers and St Paul’s in the last-eight thanks to a 5-1 victory, where James Carolan struck from 40 yards for the Reds’ fifth goal. Reegan Russell headed home Tower’s consolation.
St Peter will meet Grouville for a place in the semi-finals after the Easterners defeated Beeches Old Boys 4-0 at Springfield, with Ethan Boudin adding a single to Russell’s triple, while St Brelade’s new signing Aaron Gouveia carded a ‘perfect’ hat-trick (left foot, right foot, header) as they beat Sporting Academics 3-0.
‘I’m really pleased to have got Charlie on board,’ said St Peter manager Gary Freeman. ‘I was chatting to him over the summer and we’re delighted he’s picked us. He gives us that cutting edge that we haven’t had for a couple of years.
Trinity and St John get their seasons under way this evening as they battle for a quarter-final tie with St Brelade, while Rozel Rovers and Jersey Portuguese meet at Le Couvent. The winner of that clash will play either St Clement or Westerners St Ouen, who did lead 2-1 with an hour played last night before the referee was forced to halt play.
