THREE Island athletes met 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games qualification standards at FB Fields on Saturday as Jersey Spartan Athletics Club held their first Le Masurier Open.

Used as an early-season tester for over 80 athletes from Jersey, Guernsey and London-based St Mary’s & Richmond AC, the Open gave NatWest Island Games hopefuls the chance to put themselves in pole position for selection for Jersey 2015, but the Spartan trio of Sam Stenhouse, Dami Williams and Yuri Pereira went one step further.

Junior Yuri Pereira qualified for the Youth Commonwealth Games in the shot putt and achieved the Island Games A standard in the hammer

With September’s Youth Commonwealth’s in Samoa in sight, Williams ran, Pereira threw and Stenhouse jumped to personal success in the St Clement sunshine and are now likely to be considered for the long trip out to the Pacific nation.

Following a first competitive track appearance for former Great Britain bobsledder Will Golder in the 100 metres (the 26-year-old ran 11.76 seconds in race one to finish third behind Jersey’s Ross Jeffs and Guernsey’s Ala Chalmers), Williams claimed second in race two, behind St Mary’s Mutara Sheriff, clocking a new personal best of 11.14s.

Jeffs led the way again in the long jump, leaping 6.96m, but second-placed Stenhouse (16) smashed his lifetime best by 36 cm (6.71m) to exceed the mark set by Commonwealth selectors. This feat was also achieved by Pereira in the shot putt, with the breezy conditions having no effect on his winning throw of 14.97m.

Elsewhere, Sarnians Hywel Robinson and James Sermon claimed a one-two finish in the 200m and club colleagues Cameron Chalmers and Sam Wallbridge did the same in the 400m, with Chalmers sneaking under 50 seconds by the finest of margins (49.99s).

Also breaking time ‘barriers’ were 3000m steeplechase runners Ed Mason and Dan Romeril; who both dipped under the ten-minute mark. Mason claimed an impressive win for Guernsey in a time that would have claimed silverware in the past two Island Games (9 min 57.62 sec), but it was Jerseyman Romeril’s performance that was perhaps the more impressive as he clocked 9.59.43 (good enough for gold at Bermuda 2013) on his first ever run in the event to meet the ‘A’ standard for Team Jersey.

Holly Widdowson leapt to a new high jump personal best of 1.62m just minutes after finishing second in the women's 100m

There were also smiles on the faces of Jersey’s two female high-jump hopefuls, with Holly Widdowson (1.62m) and Elli Heyes (1.52m) finishing ahead of Guernsey’s Rebecca Toll to all-but secure Games selection with new personal bests, and junior Yasmin Lookess caused somewhat of an upset in the women’s 400m, finishing strongly in her first competitive run over one-lap to cross the line ahead of the field in 61.20s.

Island Games veteran Paul Derrien led the way for Jersey in the men’s hammer (43.95m), and is likely to be joined by the versatile Pereira at the end of June after the 17-year-old surpassed the A standard with a throw of 40.51m, while Emily Cassidy finished ahead of former multiple Games medallist Claire Lidster in the women’s 100m hurdles and Stan Livingston opened his 2015 account with a 55.01s run in the 400m hurdles.
