Having lost their first game of the round-robin tournament 2-0, the Island team settled to the conditions, drawing their next game 1-1. After that mixed start Jersey A won all of their remaining six games, beating York and Humberside in their final match to claim the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Jersey's gymnasts also performed extremely well at the Games, returning home with several medals and winning high praise from Jersey Special Gymnastics Club head coach John Grady.

Jersey had 14 representatives competing for the Southern Region of Great Britain at the three day event which is run every four years.

Grady said: 'Everyone performed as well as they could. In these events it's always a worry that mistakes will happen but the whole team performed on a par with or exceeded their expectations. It was great to be part of.'
