The 20-year-old, who is ranked number two in Britain and 103 in the world, put up a brave fight against Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska on the centre court, but was not able to match the strength and accuracy of her opponent’s shots. She lost 0-6, 2-6 in just under one hour.

Watson only won her first match at Wimbledon on Monday, however, and can be proud of the fact that she is the first British woman in ten years to reach the third round of the championships.

She and Laura Robson, who lost in the first round of the women’s doubles yesterday, have been picked to represent Britain in the Olympics in London this summer.
