The Range, which specialises in furniture, DIY and art supplies and has 170 outlets across the UK, has submitted an application to turn Jacksons’ Motor Mall site on Grande Route de St Jean into a retail outlet. It is hoped that the new store could create around 50 jobs.

A spokesperson for The Range said: ‘Jersey is a market we’ve been looking at for some time and we’re very excited to be submitting this planning application. Our ethos has always been to bring our customers great-quality products at the most competitive prices, drawing together everything needed to create beautiful homes.’

The application also includes plans to widen the road at the site and create a feeder lane with what it says would be safer access and exit points, wider pavements and a new bus shelter.

Under the proposed changes Jacksons would move all of its vehicle sales and services to its primary site in St Peter. The car dealership says there would be no redundancies resulting from its business-consolidation proposals.

The Range was founded by Devon-born entrepreneur Chris Dawson in 1989 and is now owned by his wife, Sarah, after ownership was transferred in 2017.

In that year details emerged about a proposed £20 million retail development opening in Jersey, and speculation persisted that the Dawsons were behind the project. However, the plans never came to fruition.

The couple, who live in Jersey, recently placed 79th on the Sunday Times Rich List and were the third-wealthiest Channel Islanders listed, with an estimated fortune of £2.05 billion.
