A LOCAL metal detectorist who set up Jersey Lost Ring Metal Detecting group on Facebook has been nominated by Fenella Le Signe for Community Champion of the Year Award.
Steven Andrews has been praised for the many “hours of his spare time finding lost and often very sentimental rings, bringing so much joy back to so many Islanders” by Mrs Le Signe.
Rings often fall off owners fingers in the sea whilst they are swimming or doing other beach activities, and so Mr Andrews spends a long time scouring beaches in order to return valued jewellery, his nominator explained.
Mrs Le Signe praised Mr Andrews for being a very “humble and unassuming man” who is often overlooked for his dedication between his shifts as a firefighter for Jersey Fire and Rescue Service to “helping retrieve these special items”.
His nominator said that Mr Andrews “truly embodies” a Jersey Community Champion as he has returned over 145 sentimental pieces over his years of searching Jersey Beaches.
