WHEN a devastating earthquake hit Venezuela, Mariano Antonio Ferreira Correia’s life was turned upside down. His brother Javier was killed, while several members of his family lost their home.
From his barber shop in St Helier, Mr Correia has held sales of cakes and other items, where people pay what they can. After raising £1,000 with his first event, he has continued his fundraising efforts and has collected more than £13,000 so far.
He also helped to organise the shipping and distribution of two tonnes of supplies, which have helped to provide relief for Venezuelans trying to rebuild their lives. His barbershop has become a drop-off point for Islanders who want to help Venezuelans during this difficult time.
Nominating him for Volunteer/Fundrasier of the Year, Daniel Devaux said that “he has been so selfless in his actions and I believe no one is more deserving of this award than him”.
His commitment to helping other Islanders whose families have suffered in this tragedy, while also dealing with his own grief, show Mr Correia’s generosity and strength of spirit, Mr Devaux added.
