A PRIMARY school in Jersey has been officially recognised by UNICEF for its commitment to children’s rights.
St Saviour’s Primary School was this week awarded UNICEF UK’s Gold Rights Respecting School Award, as part of the Rights Respecting Schools programme.
The award, which is the highest recognition available through the programme, stems from the school’s inclusive principles and strong commitment to children’s rights.
The humanitarian aid agency highlighted the school’s Pupil Government and Jersey School Council Network initiatives as giving pupils the chance to understand their rights and engage in global issues.
Head teacher Kirstie Williams described the prestigious award as a “very proud moment for our school”.
“Our children understand their rights, respect the rights of others and use their voices to make a positive difference,” she said. “This award reflects the commitment of our pupils, staff and families.
“We are delighted to celebrate this achievement together.”
Education Minister Catherine Curtis echoed Ms Williams’s enthusiasm and congratulated the school for their good work.
She said: “This recognition reflects the dedication of the whole school community and the positive impact its rights-based approach is having on children and young people.”
