FAMILIES embarking on a festive game of Monopoly could see squabbles over Mont Orgueil, being sent straight to La Moye or picking up £50 to mark Liberation Day.

More than two decades since the first Jersey edition of the equally popular and frustrating board game, a new Island-themed version is set to be launched.

Several local retailers are set to stock the game, which is being unveiled following a public consultation which invited Islanders to make suggestions for spaces on the board – including Jersey-specific Community Chest and Chance cards.

The ‘Big Reveal’ – at Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in St Helier this morning – will see more than 30 of the Island’s organisations and landmarks that feature in the game announced and revealed for the very first time.

Some of the quirks of the Jersey edition which have been revealed include players collecting 50 Monopoly dollars on Liberation Day, while another card penalises people for daring to travel to the mainland.

The traditional stations have been replaced by the Airport and the Marina, while a Jersey cow adorns the game money.

Local charity Holidays for Heroes Jersey, which offers ex-service personnel and HM service workers holidays to the Island, has its own square on the board following a public vote.

Adele Langlois, chair of Holidays for Heroes Jersey, said: “We are delighted that the public voted Holidays for Heroes Jersey to be the charity on the new Monopoly: Jersey Edition board.

“This shows the high regard for our Armed Forces personnel in the Island and we hope everyone enjoys playing the new game.”

Ben Ladd Gibbon, partnerships manager at Winning Moves UK, said: “Thank you to everyone who took part in our public consultation process. We have been wonderfully spoilt for choice putting this unique game together.”

Local toyshop Bambola Toymaster features on its own square and will sell the game alongside Waterstones, TG Jones and online retailers.
