ISLANDERS will be able to surrender unwanted guns and dangerous weapons for free during a month-long amnesty.
Organised by the Constables Committee, the scheme will run from 1 to 30 November, offering a safe, confidential and lawful way to give up firearms, gun parts, ammunition and other weapons.
Committee chair Constable Andy Jehan said: “The amnesty is intended for anyone who has a firearm or dangerous weapon that they are no longer entitled to possess or no longer wish to keep. It’s a safe opportunity to surrender unwanted weapons.”
He added: “Importantly, the amnesty provides protection from prosecution for possession of an unregistered firearm or other weapon, firearms parts or ammunition where the purpose of possession is to surrender the item(s) under the amnesty.”
Anyone wishing to surrender an item should call 07797 818495 during November to arrange safe collection by designated registered firearms dealers. The line will operate around the clock.
Members of the public must not take weapons to a parish hall, police station or another location unless specifically instructed. They should follow the instructions provided and avoid handling, carrying or transporting items unnecessarily.
Knives, axes, swords, spear guns, BB guns, bows and arrows, maces, pepper sprays, and antique and decorative weapons will also be accepted. There will be no charge for surrendering items for destruction.
Mr Jehan said: “People may find themselves in possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon that they no longer wish to retain. This may happen, for example, following an inheritance, the closure of a collection, or a change in personal circumstances.
“I would encourage anyone who wishes to make use of the amnesty throughout November.”
Figures reported in 2025 revealed that Jersey had more than 8,200 legal firearms – approximately one for every 12 residents – held under 1,096 firearms certificates.
The committee is conducting a firearms review as part of the Parishes and Government Review. This will include a new application form, a review of fees and proposed restrictions on owning or importing air rifles above 12lb of muzzle energy.
