PLANS to upgrade Quayside Restaurant’s terrace with a retractable roof and sliding glass doors have been submitted.

The Liberty Wharf restaurant is seeking permission to replace its ageing aluminium roof with an automated system that could open in fine weather and close to keep out rain.

Sliding glazed doors would allow the terrace to be enclosed during poorer weather, while a new fire escape door would provide direct access to the existing external staircase.

A planning statement prepared by 9X5 Architects said the changes would allow the space to be “used comfortably in cooler months” and improve escape arrangements for customers and staff.

The replacement structure would measure approximately 14.9 metres long and six metres wide – slightly shorter and a metre wider than the existing canopy. Its three-metre height and white finish would remain the same.

Adjustable roof slats would provide shade and ventilation, with rainwater draining through the supporting posts when the roof is closed. Integrated LED lighting is also proposed.

The architects said that the terrace is already a familiar feature of the area and that the replacement would appear as “a refreshed, modern version of the same building element”.

They described its visual impact as negligible, saying the glazed sides and slim aluminium frame would retain a light appearance.

No changes are proposed to the footprint of the terrace itself or public routes around Liberation Square.

The works would require no significant groundwork, with the new structure fixed to the existing terrace deck and supports.
