THE sentencing of a man found guilty of raping a younger woman he matched with on a dating app has been “unfortunately” adjourned.

Ian Michael Agostini (31) was found to have committed four sexual offences against a “naïve” and “sexually inexperienced” Islander at his bedsit flat in St Helier last year.

Jurors in the Royal Court deliberated for four hours and twenty minutes before finding the defendant unanimously guilty of two counts of rape, sexual penetration without consent, and sexual touching without consent.

Wearing a black T-shirt, Agostini appeared at the same court yesterday via video link for a hearing to fix a date for sentencing.

Crown Advocate Lauren Hallam, prosecuting, explained that a Superior Number sentencing on 15 October had been adjourned by Deputy Bailiff Mark Temple on Thursday.

“I would propose that we adjourn this matter to the Samedi List on 6 November,” she advised. “In the meantime, we will find a Superior Number sentencing date and bring that matter back to court to list it formally.”

Commissioner Michael Birt, presiding, told Agostini: “Unfortunately, the sentencing date had to be put off, but we’re going to fix a new date on 6 November for you to come back, on which a new sentencing date will be fixed.

“In the meantime, you are remanded in custody.”
