THE £10 million transformation of the departure lounge at Jersey Airport is nearing its final stage as Ports of Jersey prepares to welcome passengers into the “massively” improved space.

Work on the project, which is upgrading facilities while also modernising infrastructure that has been in place since 1997, commenced last year.

Ports has announced that the current phase, which includes a significant portion of the visible changes – such as a new mezzanine level, a Martello-inspired lift tower, duty free area, a family area and a lot of the art – is expected to begin welcoming passengers towards the end of the week commencing 9 November.

The final stage will introduce a new bar and restaurant called The Shoreline, expected to open in April or May next year. Further improvements will also include a larger assisted travel lounge, a refurbishment of the main toilet facilities, and a retail store showcasing Genuine Jersey produce.

Ports chief executive Matt Thomas said the changes would “massively enhance the experience for our passengers”, while “showcasing the very best of Jersey”.

He continued: “From the wonderful design features through to the smallest finishing touches, it has been a privilege to work with incredible partners from across the Island to create a space that celebrates Jersey, while providing a more enjoyable and comfortable start to every journey.

“We can’t wait for our passengers to see the new departure lounge and would like to thank our partners at Ashbe Construction and everyone involved for the tremendous effort that has brought us to this point.”

Mr Thomas noted that the project, which is being funded through Ports of Jersey’s own revenue, was “much more than creating a beautiful space for our passengers”.

He highlighted that “substantial investment has been made in the 30-year old infrastructure that supports the Airport’s long-term future”, including improvements to heating, ventilation and other essential systems.
