A DEVELOPMENT of 17 homes in St Helier has been reopened following a major refurbishment project.
The Jersey Homes Trust invested £4.2 million in the programme of works at St Paul’s Gate in Dumaresq Street, which took place over a 12-month period while tenants were temporarily relocated.
Established in 1995 and having acquired St Paul’s Gate as its first property, the JHT is the Island’s largest private social housing provider, providing homes for over 800 Jersey households.
The project, which was shown off on completion to Housing Minister Malcolm Ferey, formed part of the trust’s long-term programme of investment.
Improvements have included a new zinc roof, more light and ventilation through new windows and glazing, new bathrooms, improved sound insulation, enhanced fire detection and safety systems, automatic lighting and new leak-detection systems. Outdoor areas were also a focus, along with new balconies.
JHT chair Phil Le Cornu said the trust had refinanced in 2024, ensuing that it had funding for the next 25 years to continue its improvement works.
“This significant reinvestment at St. Paul’s Gate is a clear demonstration of our commitment to reinvesting in the Island and, equally importantly, in caring for Islanders for whom a JHT property is their home,” he said.
“St. Paul’s Gate is a fantastic example of what that means in practice – we are not simply maintaining our properties, we are reinvesting in them to create homes that are more comfortable, energy efficient and sustainable for our residents, both now and for generations to come.”
Deputy Ferey said: “I am delighted to see the completion of this refurbishment in the heart of St Helier – these are valued homes and a community to the people returning to them.
“The area is vastly improved from when I used to work here as chief executive of Citizens Advice Jersey.
“The re-investment by the Jersey Homes Trust has transformed 17 homes, resulting in a place and space to live which is not only a more comfortable environment, but a modern and sustainable one for residents.”
