A GUERNSEYMAN has been banned from future Muratti fixtures following a police investigation into trouble following May’s final at Springfield Stadium.
Following the final whistle, disorder broke out which saw several individuals climb onto the pitch and clashes between the two sets of supporters.
The disruption involved a confrontation between rival supporters at one end of the Springfield pitch at the end of the match, won 2-1 by Guernsey, with flares and a wheely bin among the items thrown.
As part of the subsequent investigation, police officers reviewed video footage captured by a drone deployed during the event. This footage identified a male from Guernsey who was involved in the disorder.
The individual was identified and brought to the Island were he was interviewed Jersey police and received a written caution for his behaviour. The Jersey and Guernsey Football Associations have now confirmed that the man has been banned from attending future football fixtures.
Jersey police chief Robin Smith said: “The Muratti is a proud part of both our Island’s sporting history and is enjoyed by thousands of people across Jersey and Guernsey. Good natured rivalry between our Islands is part of the occasion and something that many people enjoy.
“What we saw on this occasion was completely unacceptable and not in keeping with either the event or the values of our communities. It was important therefore that the individual responsible was identified and held accountable for his actions.
“I would like to thank our officers, our colleagues in Guernsey and both football associations for their support. The actions of one individual will not spoil what remains one of the Channel Islands’ great sporting occasions.”
