A SPECIAL event is being held next month to allow Islanders interested in volunteering in international community projects to find out more about the work of Jersey Overseas Aid.
For more than 50 years, Jersey volunteers have supported projects in countries including Malawi, Kenya, Nepal and Zambia, helping communities tackle poverty and work towards long-term development goals.
Jersey Overseas Aid will launch its 2027 Volunteer Programme at the Royal Yacht Hotel on Wednesday 30 September.
The free event, which begins at 6pm, will provide an introduction to next year’s volunteering opportunities and offer an insight into what it is like to work alongside communities overseas on locally led development projects.
Former volunteers and members of the JOA team will share their experiences, including the challenges and rewards of volunteering and the personal and professional opportunities it can bring.
JOA’s programme is based on long-term partnerships with organisations working in communities overseas, with volunteers supporting projects that have been identified locally.
International Development Minister Carolyn Labey, who is also chair of JOA, said volunteering could help build greater understanding between Jersey and communities around the world.
“Volunteering is one of the most powerful ways to build global understanding and solidarity,” she said.
“Jersey volunteers work alongside communities overseas, learning from others and contributing to locally led development.
It is an experience that not only supports communities around the world but also brings valuable skills, perspectives and experiences back to Jersey.”
JOA said applicants do not need previous volunteering experience and added that many former volunteers return to Jersey with new perspectives and a greater understanding of global development.
Applications for the 2027 Volunteer Programme will open following the launch event. Applicants must be aged 18 or over and have lived in Jersey for at least five years.
Attendance is free, but places must be reserved in advance through Eventbrite.
