ISLANDERS are being invited to take part in a “Red Walk” this Saturday in memory of a woman who died of cancer.
Jean McLaughlin and her son John are arranging the fundraiser in memory of their daughter and sister, Karryna Lovesey, who died eight years ago after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
The walk is taking place on Saturday, on what would have been Mrs Lovesey’s 50th birthday, with those taking part asked to wear her favourite colour – red.
Mrs McLaughlin said: “My son and I wanted to do something for cancer charities in memory of her. He was very close to his sister and she was so well loved.
“She was a lovely, bubbly person who would light up any room she walked into.
She added: “She was a fighter and everybody loved her – St Thomas’s Church was packed for her funeral.
“It will be special and emotional for my son and I – we miss her terribly and wanted to do something to mark what would have been her 50th birthday.”
The walk will start at Le Braye and head towards the Watersplash and back, with any money raised going towards Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey, Friends of Jersey Oncology and Cancer Research UK Jersey.
Mother-of-two Mrs Lovesey was diagnosed with a rare genetic cancer in early 2018.
The cancer rapidly spread to her liver and, despite months of chemotherapy and a brave battle, she died in October that year.
Mrs McLaughlin said: “We are hoping to get at least 50 people – one for every year of her life and all the money raised will be for cancer research charities – Cancer Research, Macmillan Jersey and Friends of Oncology.
“We are asking anyone who comes to put a minimum of £10 in the collection.”
The walk is set to take place at 10am, with anyone interested in taking part invited to gather at Le Braye slipway from 9.30am.
