HUNDREDS of people took part in an annual 10k run for Jersey Hospice in memory of a footballer who died while playing for St John’s FC in 2009.
The Hospice 10K, held in memory of Jayson Lee, saw runners take in a route which went past some of the former police officer’s favourite places, including his home and school, as well as La Hocq slip and his final resting place.
Mr Lee’s family organised the event for 16 years following his death, before handing it over to Jersey Hospice Care in 2024. The charity has continued the event under its new name while ensuring Mr Lee’s legacy lives on.
The event has raised more than £100,000 since it first launched, with this year’s entry fees and fundraising still being counted.
Organisers are hoping Sunday’s event will have raised more than £8,000.
Marina Brockbank, community engagement officer at Jersey Hospice Care, said the charity was “so pleased” to have run another successful Hospice 10K and to still be working with the Lee family.
She said the sunshine at FB Fields had created “perfect conditions for the runners and a great atmosphere for supporters” adding that the community spirit was particularly special because the event is open to all abilities.
“The 10K is a run, not a race, so it’s open to all abilities and the community spirit was wonderful,” she said.
“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part and all of those who supported including our incredible volunteers and our event sponsor, Titan Wealth.”
Josh Brien was the overall winner and leading male, with Ewan Pilley finishing second and Adam Harris third.
Francesca Monticelli was the leading female runner, followed by Rosie Adamson and Natalie Hodge.
Haydn Taylor, chairman of Titan Wealth in Jersey, said: “What a fantastic morning of sporting enthusiasm and achievement raising money for Jersey Hospice which continues to make an enormous difference to hundreds of Islanders every year. This is Titan Wealth’s second year of sponsoring the event and it was amazing to see so many people taking part.”
