A ST Helier playground is set to close to allow construction work on a major housing development to begin.
South Hill playground is due to shut from 7 September as the Jersey Development Company starts work on the Westward housing scheme, while recently approved plans for a skate and cycle park where the reversing bays currently are is also set to begin shortly.
The Westward Housing Development involves the demolition of the former Planning Department offices – which have sat vacant for a number of years – and the construction of 139 to 145 sustainable apartments.
A newly-approved temporary town skate park will involve resurfacing, fencing, screening and landscaping work. Once completed, there will be two reversing bays left for learner drivers.
As part of the project, the JDC will replace the existing playground with a new facility in 2029, with the parish of St Helier said would be “modern, welcoming and fully inclusive”.
Hoarding will be placed around the site during construction to ensure safety.
St Helier officials said: “We know the closure will be disappointing for families, but the existing playground will be replaced with a much larger and considerably better play area.
“We apologise for the disruption and will share further details about the new playground as the plans progress”.
