A CRACKDOWN on modified e-bikes and e-scooters in British cities is not set to be repeated in Jersey, but action will be taken when the law is broken, police have said.
Responding to a query about a Metropolitan Police campaign – which has seen 2,500 seizures of illegal bikes and scooters so far this year – States of Jersey Police said the local picture was not comparable.
A spokesperson said: “We are aware of the recent national discussion around modified e-bikes and e-scooters.
“The Jersey picture is very different to the UK, with much of the enforcement activity seen in some cities linked to concerns around organised criminality, including the use of illegally modified e-bikes by gangs and individuals involved in offending.”
Under Jersey law, e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles, and e-bikes which do not comply with the legal requirements for electrically assisted pedal cycles may also be treated as motor vehicles.
Enforcement options range from advice and cautions through to prosecution, depending on the circumstances.
The spokesperson added: “We have not dedicated resource towards an operation focused specifically on e-bikes, however officers will take action where there is evidence a vehicle is being used unlawfully or in a manner that puts other road users or pedestrians at risk.”
