BATTLE of Flowers participants will be given mandatory three-minute hydration breaks every 25 minutes as temperatures are forecast to reach up to 30°C on parade day.

The Battle of Flowers Association has introduced the additional measure to help those performing, walking and working around floats cope with the expected heat on Friday.

The regular breaks will run from the start of the parade until the final exhibit reaches the Lower Park Compound, giving participants an opportunity to drink water and recover without significantly disrupting the timetable.

Float leaders and Battle coordinators have been asked to ensure participants make full use of the breaks. Those taking part are also being encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the event, wear suitable clothing and use sun protection.

Association chair Martyn Maguire said: “We are very conscious that the expected temperatures will place additional demands on those taking part in the Battle, and we want everyone to enjoy the experience safely.”

Spectators are also being urged to prepare for the heat by bringing plenty of water, sunscreen and, where possible, parasols or other forms of shade.

The association said it would continue monitoring forecasts and make further adjustments if conditions change significantly.
