ISLANDERS have been urged to take extra care when disposing of cigarettes after six discarded butts were found at Val de la Mare amid ongoing dry weather.
Jersey Water issued the warning after the cigarette butts were discovered at the site last Friday by a “concerned” member of the public.
With another heatwave this week following a prolonged period of dry conditions, the utility company warned that incorrectly discarded cigarettes, barbecues and other smoking materials could “quickly develop into a wildfire”.
The Jersey Water team said: “A wildfire at a Jersey Water site or anywhere else on the island could cause significant damage and put wildlife and the public at risk.
“It could also require a substantial emergency response and a large volume of water to bring under control, putting additional pressure on our valuable water resources during this ongoing dry period.”
Islanders were urged to “take extra care and act responsibly” when disposing of cigarettes and other smoking materials.
Jersey Water also reiterated its call for Islanders to conserve water as the hot and dry conditions continue.
“With continuing hot weather and minimal rainfall, it is also important for households and businesses to use water sparingly to help protect supplies in our reservoirs,” the team said.
