AN Islander who kicked an arresting police officer in the testicles before kicking another officer to the shoulders has been jailed for nine months.
Jared Roy Westrupp (29) lashed out at police officers responding to reports of a domestic incident in the parish of St Clement on 11 May 2026.
St Clement Centenier Philip Heard, prosecuting, said that police were called to a domestic incident at Westrupp’s address on 11 May 2026.
He added that officers “attempted to engage” with an “increasingly erratic Westrupp”, who was at one point seen “setting off what appeared to be a red flare inside of the kitchen”.
The court heard that the defendant then attempted to run away from the house before being “taken down” by one of three police officers pursuing him.
The officer who tackled Westrupp to the ground was then “stood over him when the defendant kicked upwards, making contact with his testicles”.
The man was then arrested and transported to the hospital, where paramedics discovered dihydrocodeine, pregabalin and valium-mixed-with-vodka in his system.
It was heard that Westrupp then kicked out at one of the police officers tasked with helping him onto an available hospital bed.
Mr Heard said: “During interview, Mr Westrupp stated that the first kick was reckless and caused by adrenalin, but that he knew he had kicked him in the testicles.
“He stated that he kicked [the second police officer] as a joke, to show the officer that he could do it if he wanted to, although he did not think that he had connected.”
He added that the defendant was now in “breach of court orders” because of previous convictions for assaulting police officers.
Westrupp previously received seven months in prison for assaulting an officer in 2023, and a probation order for attempting to assault an officer in 2024.
Advocate Paul Nicholls, defending, described his client’s offending as “deeply rooted in trauma” and not motivated by hostility towards the police.
Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz, presiding, told Westrupp: “I accept that you have had a very difficult upbringing and that your use of alcohol is clearly behind all of your offending.
“On the other hand, there are now four occasions on which you have assaulted – or attempted to assault – the police.
“The police do a difficult job and an assault on a police officer while they are carrying out their duties is completely unacceptable.”
She opted to hand Westrupp a total sentence of nine months imprisonment for the two offences.
“I do hope that you’ll take time in custody to address your difficulties so you can put this incident and further offending behind you”, she said.
