A “REMARKABLE” collection of historic prints of scenes of Jersey’s castles, coast and rural areas spanning nearly a century have been donated to the Société Jersiaise’s Lord Coutanche Library.
The prints, which include scenes from Grève de Lecq Valley, St Aubin’s Bay, St Helier’s Port and St Catherine’s Bay, “offer fascinating insights into Jersey’s past, capturing both its natural beauty and its working life, from bustling harbours to the stone quarry at Mount Mado”, Société explained.
“Many of the engravings were originally printed in black and white before being carefully coloured by hand, making each impression subtly unique. Particularly striking are several pairs of prints produced from the same engraved plates but coloured differently, demonstrating how colourists could transform the atmosphere and character of a scene through their artistic choices,” the organisation added.
Islanders are able to view the prints by appointment in the Lord Coutanche Library by emailing library@societe.je. Access is free for members, while non-members can purchase a reader’s ticket.
