STUDENTS preparing to leave for university this autumn are being reminded to get vaccinated against meningitis B before moving into halls of residence.
Public Health has announced a series of walk-in MenB vaccination clinics throughout August for current Year 13 students – or those of an equivalent age – as well as young people under 25 who are moving into university accommodation for the first
time.
The MenB vaccine helps protect against meningococcal group B disease, a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia.
Health officials are encouraging eligible students to attend as early as possible, as two doses of the vaccine are needed to provide the best protection. The doses must be given at least 28 days apart.
The walk-in clinics, which do not require an appointment, will be held at the Town Church on 4 and 11 August from noon until 3pm, and on 5 and 12 August from 4pm until 7pm.
Students attending should bring photo identification showing their date of birth. Those who are not in the current Year 13 age group but are starting university for the first time should also bring their university offer letter.
