A COMPETITION designed to celebrate Jersey’s farming community and their commitment to biodiversity, soil health and sustainable agriculture is returning for its third year.
The Cover Crop Competition, launched by The Jersey Royal Company, encourages local growers to enhance the Island’s natural environment.
Cover crops – which are planted between potato seasons – are grown primarily to protect and improve the soil rather than for harvest or sale and help provide habitats for pollinators and birds.
As part of the competition, growers will compete in five categories: Best Bird Cover Crop, Best Visual Cover Crop, Best Pollinator Cover Crop, Best Soil Health Cover Crop, and the Best Overall Cover Crop.
The judging process will take place in August and October, with the winners being announced at the Jersey Farmers Conference in November. Cris Sellares, Dawn Venton, Tina Hull, and Paul Gibbs will make up the judging panel.
This initiative forms part of the Jersey Royal Company’s bid to support regenerative farming and sustainable potato production.
