A FUNDRAISER set up by a Venezuelan Islander to help those in his home country affected by the devastating earthquakes that killed his brother has raised almost €5,000 in one week.

Mariano Antonio Ferreira Correia launched an appeal for donations to help survivors of the recent earthquakes in Venezuela.

His 36-year-old brother Javier, a former Jersey café worker, was among the over 3,300 people killed on Wednesday 24 June.

Mr Correia began collecting physical donations at his workplace in St Helier, and set up an online fundraiser to purchase essential items like food, water, medicines and pay for logistical costs of delivering them to affected communities.

It has been met with strong support, quickly gaining traction, already nearly reaching its €5,000 target, which is equivalent to approximately £4,377, within just one week of it being launched.

Mr Correia said: “We are immensely grateful to all the people of Jersey, the entire Portuguese population and the rest of the nationalities who live in Jersey and have given their support.

“Thank you very much. Whenever they need some help, count on me, and I will always be here for everyone. Thank you very much, people of Jersey. Thank you very much.”

Mr Correia is no longer able to accommodate physical donations at his workplace due to a lack of space, but added that Islanders who have already bought items can still drop them off.

Money raised in Jersey has already been used to deliver food and essential supplies to survivors in Venezuela.
