BOAT owners and those planning to head out on the water this summer are reminded to take simple precautions that could help prevent potentially devastating onboard fires.

With the Island’s waters expected to become increasingly busy over the coming months, the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging Islanders to check that their vessels are properly maintained and equipped before setting sail.

The crew say fires on boats can spread rapidly because flammable vapours can build up in enclosed spaces, increasing the risk of a blaze taking hold.

Boat owners are advised to regularly inspect and maintain fuel lines and engines, install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to provide early warning, and ensure fire extinguishers are easy to access — ideally positioned near an exit — with everyone onboard knowing how to use them.

The Fire Service is also reminding skippers to make sure there are enough lifejackets for every passenger and to carry essential safety equipment, including a day and night flare pack and a Very High Frequency (VHF) radio to call for help in an emergency.

Throughout the summer, Jersey Fire and Rescue will be working alongside Jersey Coastguard, the Jersey Lifeboat Association and RNLI Jersey to promote safety on the Island’s waters and encourage boat users to be prepared before heading to sea.

Islanders are urged to carry out basic safety checks before every trip to help ensure a safe and enjoyable boating season.
