TWO local artists have been selected to create a new community mural in Pier Road – and are inviting Islanders to help leave their mark on the finished work.

Karen Le Roy Harris and Esther Rose Parkes, who are part of the Moving Arts Collective, were chosen to replace the 26-year-old original which sits above the steps leading down to Ordnance Yard by Jersey Heritage, which asked the artists to take inspiration from its flagship ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ exhibition at the nearby Jersey Museum.

The artists said: “At its heart, this project is about connection – between land and sea, people and place, and our shared sense of belonging. We’re looking forward to gathering stories, poems and words from communities across Jersey and weaving them into a mural and collective song shaped by many voices.”

Over the coming months, they will work with schools, community groups and Islanders to those themes.

Through a series of workshops, participants will contribute stories, words, and reflections that will help to shape both the mural and a collective song created with and for the community.

Four school workshops have already taken place with La Moye and St Mary primary schools. Next week will involve St Lawrence and St Clement schools, as well as a drop-in workshop for Pier Road residents.

The current mural at 13, Pier Road was painted in 1999 by Jersey artist Jason Butler.

It is hoped that work on the mural will start at the beginning of August and be finished by the end of September 2026.

Although the mural itself does not need Planning permission, two logos – for Jersey Heritage and sponsor Benest & Syvret – do need consent because they are classed as advertising,

There will also be a painted QR code as part of the mural that will take the viewer to a webpage on the Jersey Heritage website to access the song and learn more about the mural project.

Founded in 2022, The Moving Arts Collective is a group of artists who work across the disciplines of writing, music, movement, visual art and curation.
