Government ‘data team’ on hand to help voters who find themselves off electoral roll

A CENTRAL ‘data team’ has been set up by the government to help verify people voting today who do not appear on the electoral register.

This year, the Island has moved to automatic voter registration, which is based on existing information held by the government. This has increased the Island’s electoral register from the 60,700 people eligible for the 2022 election to the approximately 84,500 Islanders on the roll for tomorrow’s selection.

Since the move, parishes have been busy reconciling the old and new systems.

The JEP has been told of cases where people have discovered that they do not appear on the roll; however, the government said that it did not expect many people turning up to vote to be told they could not.

That said, a government spokesperson told the newspaper that the law allowed people not on the roll to vote if the election officer at each polling station was satisfied of their right to cast a ballot.

In practical terms, they added, this meant all the polling stations would have the necessary forms for any voters in this situation.

The parishes also have access to parish records for verification purposes and there will be a government ‘data team’ on hand for any verification of Employment, Social Security and Housing data needed.

Voters need to bring ID with them to their polling station.
