JERSEY’S premier music festival is returning this year with its first headliner set to bring the sound of the 90s reimagined with a classical twist.
Weekender Festival will take place on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September at the People’s Park.
And the first headliner for the Friday night has been confirmed as Britpop Classical – a new project from Blur’s Alex James which features the biggest hits of the Britpop era performed by a full 38-piece orchestra.
Organiser Warren Le Sueur said: “We’re incredibly excited to be able to welcome Alex James and his Britpop Orchestra to Jersey.
“The Oasis reunion last year showed how much the music from that era is still loved and this is a special opportunity to hear the classic songs that everyone knows performed in a completely unique way. It is something that is selling out venues across the UK and we were really keen to bring to the Island because we believe it will be a truly special performance.
“The orchestra will be playing all the big hits and this style of blending contemporary music with classical instruments has not been seen before in Jersey on this scale so we are in for a massive treat.”
Britpop Classical will draw on the catalogues of Pulp, Oasis, The Verve and James’s own band Blur among others.
Mr James said: “I am so excited to announce that I’m bringing my Britpop Classical to the Weekender on Friday 11 September. We’re taking the biggest anthems of a generation and we’re blowing them up with a full 38-piece orchestra and special guest vocalists. It’s loud, it’s cinematic, and it’s going to be legendary.”
The festival is moving back to its traditional September timeslot having being held in July last year.
Thousands attend the festival every year, with last year’s event headlined by Faithless and Sugababes, while also featuring performances from the likes of the Reytons, K-Klass and the Pigeon Detectives.
Priority access tickets are available from weekender.je from 7pm on Thursday 4 June, before general release on Friday 5 June.
