SPENDING on the machinery supporting Jersey’s politicians surged sharply last year, with major increases in staffing and facilities costs revealed in the States Assembly’s latest annual report.
Figures show that expenditure on States Greffe staff increased from £2.6 million in 2024 to £4.14 million in 2025 – a rise of more than £1.5 million in a single year.
At the same time, spending on premises and facilities jumped from £331,472 to £2.41 million.
By comparison, elected Members’ remuneration rose by around £200,000 over the same period, while costs for travel and inter-parliamentary activity fell.
The States Greffe – which provides administrative, research and procedural support to Members – has taken on expanded activity in recent years, particularly in digital engagement, public outreach and scrutiny work.
The report highlights growing demand for these services, including research, communications and constituency support, alongside increased output from Scrutiny Panels.
Demand for internal support has also risen markedly, with research requests from Members increasing and constituency support work almost doubling over the year.
