A NEW register is being launched to help businesses protect their intellectual property, the Jersey Financial Service Commission has announced.

It will initially provide digital trademark services and then digital patent and design services to follow shortly afterwards.

This phased delivery aims to create a single, streamlined system for all IP matters on the Island, the commission said.

From 1 August, applications for patent and design registration must still be submitted to the JFSC, even though digital services for these IP types will be introduced later.

Assistant Economic Development Minister Moz Scott said she “welcomes” the announcement, describing it as an “important step” in modernising Jersey’s IP.

The move also helps the Island’s economic wellbeing by “reducing red tape, enhancing opportunities for businesses, and strengthening Jersey’s international reputation”.

Beverley Kent, executive director of registry, added that it is a “significant milestone” for those who rely on “strong protection for their intellectual property”.

He said: “It’s a great example of how we’re modernising the registry to provide better digital services and clearer processes.

“We’re supporting innovation, encouraging new opportunities for growth and delivering on our commitment to excellent service.

“We look forward to working closely with industry as we take this step forward.”
