A FOUNDING member of political movement Value Jersey is set to stand for the upcoming election.
Phil Romeril will seek one of the three Deputy seats on offer in the St Lawrence, St John and Trinity district.
Sitting district representatives Deputies Kirsten Morel and Hilary Jeune are both seeking to be returned as Deputies for St John, St Lawrence and Trinity, while Deputy Elaine Millar is standing for Senator and Deputy Andy Howell for Trinity Constable.
Mr Romeril has been a leading figure in the launch of Value Jersey which has said previously stated that it is not a party which endorses candidates, but a movement which has developed a roadmap that any candidate can endorse. Mr Romeril has confirmed he has stepped back from the group to focus on his campaign.
A trained pharmacist, Mr Romeril has said his family roots in the district can be traced back to the 13th century as farmers in St John, while his mother’s family are from St Lawrence, and he has lived in district for most of his life.
He said: “St John, St Lawrence and Trinity are the heart of Jersey. These parishes are built on strong community ties and practical teamwork. I am standing because Jersey’s political leadership should reflect those same values: working together, focusing on outcomes, and putting people and place first.”
He co-founded Call&Check to help elderly Islanders live safely at home and is the current chair of Family Nursing and Home Care.
Mr Romeril added: “There comes a moment when you have to say: I want to be in that room. That moment is now.
“St John, St Lawrence and Trinity deserve a Deputy who knows them, not just their geography, but their character. I have family memories going back generations within these parishes. I will carry that into every debate, every vote, every decision.”
He finished fifth in St Helier North election in 2022 when standing for the Jersey Alliance, missing out on one of the four Deputy roles there.
Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June, the first time a Jersey election has been held on the weekend.
