The States Assembly

THE Jersey Youth Assembly will be debating next week whether the Island should follow Australia and ban social media should for under-16s.

The JYA – which has more than 160 members aged 14-19 – will be holding its second formal debate in the States Chamber on Tuesday with Deputy Bailiff Mark Temple presiding and several States Members, including the Chief Minister, following events closely.

The JYA exists not only to provide a forum for young people to discuss matters important to them but also for decision makers to hear those views.

As well as debate the pros and cons of social media, next week’s assembly will also debate whether vapes should be available by prescription only for those seeking to quit smoking cigarettes.

These proposals have been put forward by the JYA’s 11-member executive group, which steers the direction of its work.

The debates in the JYA will be preceded by questions to four ministers: Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan, Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat, Health Minister Tom Binet and Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham.

The debate will be held between 12.30 am to 4 pm and is open to the public.
