PORTS of Jersey’s plan to remove the ageing and weathered landing stage at the end of Gorey Pier “remains on track” subject to planning approval.

The States-owned entity said it was concluding a contractor procurement process for the project, which will see the removal of the upper deck and support pillars, as well as the installation of temporary support bracing from the lower deck to the original pier structure.

A planning application was validated in December and, if approved, works could start in March or April.

The project forms part of a wider strategy by Ports to “stabilise and protect” Gorey Pier, which is grade-one listed.

Royal Engineers raised safety concerns over the landing stage in 2022, which saw it partially closed at the end of that year – with access fully withdrawn in 2023 following further inspections.

Ports has previously cited “significant” structural deterioration, something that has also been found in the former terminal building at the end of the pier.

The stabilisation strategy is being developed using wave modelling, LIDAR scans, bathymetric surveys and crack monitoring data.

The planned work to remove the landing stage is expected to be carried out from the seaward side, with a view to being completed before the summer season.

A Ports spokesperson said the project “remains on track”, though they noted that this was “subject to receiving planning approval within the planning department’s target decision timeframe and assuming there are no unexpected planning conditions applied”.

“We are nearing completion of the contractor procurement process and expect to be able to confirm the appointment before the end of the month,” they added.

“This ensures we are ready to move quickly once planning approval is received.”
