AN endangered loggerhead turtle washed up in Jersey during Storm Goretti is continuing to make strong progress, with vets now preparing for the next stage of her recovery.

Crush is currently being cared for at New Era Veterinary Hospital, where she has been moved into a larger tank to help rebuild her strength.

Staff said she is eating well and thriving, with a steady supply of warmed seawater generously provided by The Jersey Oyster Company.

Crush’s veterinary treatment is nearly complete, and plans are now under way to transfer her off-island.

As a protected species, extensive paperwork is required, with import arrangements completed by Weymouth Sealife and export forms finalised in Jersey.

A New Era Veterinary Hospital spokesperson said: “There is a great deal of confusion over the exact needs of customs and border force as to what and when things are needed – but we are hoping to sort these in the next few days.”

Once transferred to Weymouth, Crush will continue rehabilitation away from public view before being released into warmer waters in spring – giving her the best possible chance to return to the wild.
