THERE are currently no children being held at HMP La Moye, the Children’s Minister has confirmed – after it emerged last month that part of the Island’s adult prison was still being used as a young offenders institution.
Constable Richard Vibert provided the update in response to questions from the JEP, regarding a previous statement by the Children, Young People, Education and Skills department in December.
At the time, the department said that a “suitable” part of La Moye remained designated as a young offenders institution.
It first emerged in May last year that Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat had made the designation under Article 27 of the Prison (Jersey) law 1957 “in order to meet young people’s needs at this time”.
The JEP understands that the decision was made after some of the Islanders being held at the Greenfields secure children’s facility damaged it to the extent that they needed to be moved.
In an update on Friday, Mr Vibert said that: “We do not currently have any young people under 18 years placed at La Moye at this time.”
The JEP has asked the Justice and Home Affairs department whether the young offenders institution designation remains in place in part of the prison.
