HE posed for more photos than most Islanders, ruled one of the Island’s most popular tourist attractions with a confident crow, and inspired at least one visitor to become vegetarian…

Roger, the iconic and beloved cockerel of La Mare Wine Estate, has sadly passed away.

La Mare Wine Estate shared on Monday that the “beautiful” nine-year-old cockerel “had taken his final crow and flown to the great cockerel meadow in the sky”, after a lifetime spent charming visitors and tourists.

The La Mare team said Roger was “likely the most photographed cockerel in the world” and was a “true ambassador” for the wine estate.

According to the company, a visitor was once that inspired by the animal that they gave up their carnivore diet in favour of a vegetarian lifestyle.

“Roger wasn’t just any cockerel, he was a star, a friend, and a true ambassador of La Mare Wine Estate,” the team said.

“Over his nine-plus years, he captured the hearts of everyone who met him, from loyal visitors to first-time guests.

They continued: “His legacy of joy, laughter, and memories will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to know him.

“…Thank you, Roger, for bringing us so much happiness. You will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.”

News of Roger’s demise prompted an outpouring of appreciative tributes from many of those who came across the feathered fellow.

Among those to share their sadness at the news on social media was the Genuine Jersey team, while civil celebrant Lynsey Mallinson reminisced: “Sad to hear this. Roger was always the first guest I’d meet when coming to do ceremonies – always made me smile.”
