THE owner of a kiosk that once traded at La Pulente slipway before being forced to move when a restaurant opened nearby has said that he has been overwhelmed by the response to his announcement of plans to bring it back.

Karl Sutton, who ran the Hideout until he moved the kiosk two years ago, said that positive comments from Islanders at the news that he would be seeking to return had made him more determined to proceed.

He said: “Judging from people’s views to me and online, there is definitely an appetite for the Hideout to return. Let’s hope common sense prevails.”

Mr Sutton had to stop trading and move from the slip access road as a condition of his permit, issued by the Parish of St Brelade, when Nude Dunes opened nearby.

However, the restaurant closed down in October 2023, just five months after opening, when the business running it went bust.

Recently, Nude Dunes was put on the rental market, with a proviso that the building cannot be used to serve hot food.

This has prompted Mr Sutton to make plans to bring his kiosk back.

He said he would be applying to the Planning Department and the parish for the necessary permissions.

Mr Sutton added that although he understood that obtaining a permit from St Brelade may involve a tender process, he would still be disappointed if that was the case, as he had built the business up from scratch, since first opening at La Pulente in October 2016.

“This may not be plain sailing, but the initial reaction has certainly fuelled my determination to bring the Hideout back,” he said.
