LOCAL charities are facing a “challenging ” festive period, with a campaign to raise their visibility and encourage Islanders to offer their support under way, the head of the representative body for the sector has said.
Marcus Liddiard, chief executive of the Association of Jersey Charities, said the organisation was determined to shine a spotlight on the work of local groups during the festive period, explaining that the charity sector continues to feel the pressure.
“We’re very conscious that it remains a challenging environment for charities,” he said, adding that the AJC was increasing its presence across the Island to help organisations raise the funds they need.
As part of that effort, ten charities will take turns hosting the AJC table at this year’s Genuine Jersey Simply Christmas Market in the Royal Square, each taking over the stall for a day.
Visitors will find Christmas cards, gifts, raffle tickets and other fundraising items on offer, with charities including Les Amis, Music in Action, Durrell, CRY Jersey, Headline Waves, Jersey Cancer Relief, Tiny Seeds, Ocean Culture Life, FNHC and Finni’s Ark Sanctuary taking part.
Mr Liddiard said the initiative builds on a long-standing seasonal tradition.
“The AJC has a long tradition of supporting local charities at Christmas, and I’m pleased that we will have such a strong presence at this year’s Simply Christmas – providing a platform for local charities to tell people about their good work and raise important funds to support their activities,” he said.
The market, which runs every Thursday to Sunday until 14th December, features more than 60 local producers offering festive gifts, food and handcrafted items, with free entry for all visitors.
Mr Liddiard added: “I’d encourage Islanders to come along to the market and play their part in supporting our amazing local charities – they really do appreciate your support.”
