Orsa, the new Greater bamboo lemur arrival at Jersey Zoo.

JERSEY Zoo has become of one of just ten holders of a critically endangered lemur species in the world.

Greater bamboo lemur Orsa arrived in the Island from Cotswold Wildlife Park.

The three-year-old male is set to be joined in Jersey by two female greater bamboo lemurs and baby boy in the next month. It is hoped that they will go on to welcome more greater bamboo lemur babies.

Jersey Zoo deputy curator of mammals Georgia Gotts said: “We are beyond excited to welcome Orsa to Jersey Zoo.

“Greater bamboo lemurs are like the rockstars of the lemur world, due to them being incredibly rare, full of character, and adored by everyone who meets them.

“Being selected as a zoo to safeguard and hopefully reproduce this species is an honour.

“We hope our visitors enjoy meeting Orsa over the coming weeks and learning more about this precious species.”

Greater bamboo lemurs were thought to be extinct, until they were rediscovered in the 1960s, with around only 1,500 left in the wild.

Islanders wanting to visit Orsa can find him in Jersey Zoo’s Kirindy Forest.
