FOR the past year, diners at a local restaurant have been helping to save lives at sea – one pizza slice at a time.
At the start of 2025, Maddie’s – the restaurant at the Gorey-based Moorings Hotel run by Islanders Matthew and Iselin Jones – has donated £1 from every Santa Caterina pizza sold to the RNLI.
This week, they confirmed that a total of £1,738 had been raised over the course of the year and handed the cheque to the local RNLI branch on Wednesday.
The Moorings team explained that the charity “holds a special place in our hearts”, as Mr Jones’s brother Jonathan has been a helmsman at the St Catherine Lifeboat Station for many years, “heading out when others were heading in, years of missed dinners, cold nights, and lives quietly saved”.
“So, this total is not just a number. It’s a tribute. A thank-you. A way of honouring the courage and the heart he and all his fellow crew have given to our island,” they added.
