WITH Halloween and Bonfire Night on the horizon, Jersey’s emergency services have issued advice to keep themselves safe from fires – particularly around flammable costumes.
Islanders should remember to buy costumes carrying the CE mark, use LED lights instead of candles where possible, keep candles away from decorations and never leave them unattended.
Adults and children should be taught to “stop, drop and roll” if their clothes catch fire.
The fire service made the following recommendations:
- Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby
- Check for wildlife before lighting the bonfire
- Never leave bonfires unattended
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance
- Don’t throw fireworks on the fire
- Buy fireworks from licensed, reputable shops only and look for fireworks with the British standard BS7114
- Use daylight or a torch to read instructions, not a flame
- Use appropriate supports and launchers for fireworks.
